Transforming mental healthcare for

First Responders

Welcome to our psychotherapy practice, dedicated to providing specialized mental health services to first responders. Our practice understands the unique challenges and stressors that come with being a first responder and we are committed to helping individuals overcome the mental health issues that may arise from their work.

People ask why the name “Driftwood Psychotherapy?”  Driftwood Beach is a small beach in Calvert County where my family went when I was a kid. My grandparents lived near by and as I got older and could drive I went there alone or with friends.  It is also where I proposed to my wife, Niki. I have sat many a day with my back to the cliffs facing the bay with a cigar just thinking. It is my safe place.  This is my primary goal for Driftwood Psychotherapy…. Providing a safe place.

I want first responders of any stripe to be able to sit here and talk about whatever they need to in a place where they feel safe and at peace. My office has become my sanctuary and I want this for my clients as well. There will be no judgement here.

After all, I get it.  I was a Maryland State Trooper for 25 years.  I certainly did my time wearing the big hat and uniform, but I also had the opportunity to work in specialized units for most of my career. I have been assigned to a HIDTA DEA Task Force in Baltimore, The Warrant Apprehension Task Force in Baltimore, The MSP Special Services Division, etc. I get much of what you are going through. I understand the “dark humor” used to cope, hypervigilance, trauma (and confusion of how one event can be traumatic while another causes no distress), relationship struggles, and compassion fatigue or burn out.

We offer a safe and confidential environment where clients can explore their thoughts and emotions with a licensed therapist who has experience in working with first responders. Our approach to therapy is evidence-based and tailored to meet the individual needs of each client. We use a variety of therapeutic techniques such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness, EMDR, and trauma-focused therapy to address issues such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, and substance abuse.

At our practice, we recognize the importance of confidentiality and privacy for our clients. We adhere to the highest ethical and professional standards and take every measure to ensure the safety and comfort of our clients.

A modern approach

Here, at Driftwood Psychotherapy, I strive more to listen and walk with you as you come up with resolution on your own. I’m not here to tell you what to do. I have found asking the right questions works better than giving instructions in the long run.  I am trained in EMDR and hypnosis.  Both modalities have helped me, and I have seen them help many others here at my practice. I employ elements of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, and Solution Focused Therapy with more traditional Talk Therapy.

We welcome first responders from all backgrounds and disciplines, including law enforcement officers, firefighters, paramedics, and dispatchers, correctional officers and emergency medical technicians. We understand that seeking help can be challenging, and we are here to support and guide our clients every step of the way.

If you are a first responder experiencing mental health issues, please do not hesitate to contact us. We are here to help you take the first step towards healing and well-being.
